Aspects and Mechanisms of Grammaticalization of Gei

Dative verb Gei has a variety of grammatical function in Modern Chinese. But it is difficult to establish the cause of its multifunctional aspect through the study of the synchronic. In order to understand the change of the meanings and functions of Gei, and find the cause of these changes, this paper applied the approach of grammaticalization which is defined as “an increase of the range of a morpheme advancing from less grammatical to a more grammatical status (Kurylowicz 1965:52)”. The result of this study indicated that the grammaticalization process of Gei has two different courses: (a) Dative verb＞Causative marker＞Passive marker. (b) Dative verb＞Dative case marker＞Disposal marker. In addition, in the course of the grammaticalization of Gei, some mechanisms are employed such as metaphor, analogy, reanalysis, persistence, and layering.
