Abstract
After opening the Palace of the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nation of 1851, Britain got confidence to her goods of a high quality. Then the British government adapted free trade as her main foreign policy. Consequently, it brought Britain the richest country in the world and became known as the ‘British Empire’. After the Great Exhibition of London, on the other hand, how was the political & diplomatic situation of European nations (Germany, Italy, France, Russia, even America)? They realized that following the British case was the best way to make their country richer. Therefore they were obsessed to make the goods of a high quality. Thus European deeds aroused a politically & diplomatically scare-mongering to the British Empire and it reached a peak in 1890s. After the first Opium War (1839~1842), China (Chinese Empire) became an exclusive market for Britain. However, in the late nineteenth century, China was changed a common market for all European Powers. And then Powers had closely their foreign relations with Chinese government. At that time, Britain had to change her foreign policy in the category as interfering (with China) and struggling (with European Powers). In the circumstance, I guess it will be possible to the British foreign policy in the world can be fully seen in her relations with China. As a result, firstly I proved my guessing is right. Secondly I more clearly found the reason how and why Britain had to change her foreign policy.
