Abstract
The study analyzed the general language use of ‘OTOKO’ in contemporary written Japanese by doing a comparative analysis of <White papers 1976-2005, 2001-2005><Textbooks 2005-2007><Public relations magazines of 2008> and <Blogs of 2008> from ‘Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese’ of the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. <White papers> which were written as administrative reports suggested that forms such as 「DANJO」 「DANSEI」 「DANSHI」 accounted for 95%. 「**DANJO」 showed the increase of modifying phrases related to age in <White papers 2000s> than <White papers>. 「DANSEI」 was increased from 20% to 47% and a theme related to <Home> had the high frequency of use. 「DANSHI」 was decreased rapidly from 46% to 9% and 「DANSHI」 tended to be substituted to 「DANSEI」 as an official expression used in <White papers> in 2000s. <Textbooks> which contained normative sentences suggested that the occupation rates of 「DANSEI」 「DANSHI」 were decreased. On the other hand, the occupation rate of 「OTOKO」 which had a low frequency rate in <White papers> and <White papers 2000s> was remarkably increased. 「OTOKO」 was not presented in the official written language but used for titles of literature and art or a term of address for an ordinary man. <Public relations magazines> which contained promotional sentences suggested that the occupation rates of 「DANJO」 and 「OTOKO」 were high. 「DANSHI」 「DANSEI」 「OTOKO」were evenly used unlike <White papers> <White papers 2000s> <Textbooks>. 「DANSHI」 was presented mainly at contents related to a sports game and 「OTOKO」 「DANSEI」 were presented remarkably at contents related to a kitchen· a restaurant or cooking. <Blogs> which contained personal sentences presented various forms of vocabulary related to 「OTOKO」 but 「DANJO」 only accounted for 9%. The occupation rates of 「OTOKO」 「OTOKONOKO」 and 「CHONAN」 「JINAN」 「SANNAN」 which expressed brothers in order of age were remarkably increased even if they were hardly presented in <White papers> <White papers 2000s>. Also, 「OTOKO**」 「**OTOKO」with a positive connotation had high frequency rate.
