Abstract
This paper analyzes the criteria for selecting portraits on Japanese banknotes through the two opposite keywords of conquest and appeasement. The portraits on Japanese banknotes issued from 1885 to 1946 were often of loyalists in war who had served the Tennō. From 1946 to the present, the portraits have been chosen primarily for their contributions to world humanity and peace. This ambivalence in the selection criteria for portraits on Japanese banknotes stems from the historical background of Japan, which experienced defeat in World War II. Another interesting aspect is that this “ambivalence” is also found in the national banknotes issued between 1873 and 1883. This paper analyzes Japanese banknotes issued in colonies and occupied territories from 1899 to 1946 and characterizes the portraits. The results show that while Japanese national banknotes issued in Japan decorated with the theme of conquest against foreign enemies across the sea, the banknotes issued in the colonies and occupied territories were aimed at ‘appeasement’ by including respected or familiar figures in the local area. The theme of ‘conquest’ on Japanese national banknotes is inextricably linked to loyalty to the Tennō. On the contrary, the message of ‘peace’ after 1946 can be understood as another ‘appeasement’.
