Abstract
This study focuses on the historical significance of the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945) in the context of Southeast Asian financial history. Specifically, it examines the period from the colonial period to the Japanese occupation to the post-war British rule, focusing on Malaysia and Singapore, and actively interprets the impact of the Japanese occupation on the post-war financial system from the perspective of historical continuity. In 1942, Japan established a military administration in Singapore, also known as Syonan-to, with the occupation of Southeast Asia, and implemented various policies for monetary regulation to prepare for the wartime mobilization. Core of the policies were the replacement of currency issued by former British colonial regime and the re-organization of the banking industry in the region. In the post-war period, Britain re-established control over its former colonies, incorporating North Borneo and Sarawak, and sought to establish a new monetary system to cover its expanded colonial territory. The exclusion of the existing monetary system during the Japanese occupation provided an enabling environment for this to take place. On the other hand, the Japanese military regime’s re-organisation of the banking industry allowed Chinese banking firms to resume operations with their community roots and capital, and they were able to thrive in the new post-war financial environment. Japan's monetary regulation policies in the occupied territories was a watershed moment in the financial history of Singapore and Malaysia as the region transitioned from colonial system to a new post-war order.
