Abstract

This paper commemorates the publication of the 100th issue of 「東洋學」, summarizing the academic achievements of research papers in the field of Korean language and literature published from the first issue (1971) to the 99th issue (2024) over the past 55 years. However, rather than discussing the content of individual papers, this study focuses on a quantitative analysis to identify overall academic trends. In Section 2.1, the thematic distribution of research papers in Korean linguistics is examined. Notably, History of the Korean language accounts for 63 out of 123 papers, representing 51.2%. This is an overwhelmingly high proportion compared to other subfields of Korean linguistics and reflects the characteristic academic focus of 「東洋學」. Other research areas include phonology (3 papers, 2.4%), morphology (5 papers, 4.7%), lexicology (1 paper, 0.8%), syntax (8 papers, 6.5%), semantics (2 papers, 1.6%), history of Korean linguistics (3 papers, 2.4%), dialectology (4 papers, 3.2%), genetic classification (1 paper, 0.8%), lexicography (18 papers, 14.6%), computational linguistics (1 paper, 0.8%), language policy (1 paper, 0.8%), comparative linguistics (6 papers, 4.8%), Chinese character studies (2 papers, 1.6%), Korean language education (2 papers, 1.6%), and others (1 paper, 0.8%). When tracing topic variation over time, the 1970s and 1980s saw a strong dominance of research in history of Korean. Although this trend has not changed significantly, the proportion has gradually decreased, and from the 2000s onward, the topics have diversified into broader subfields of Korean linguistics. Section 2.2 analyzes the thematic distribution of research papers in Korean literature. A total of 112 papers were published from the 1st to the 99th issue. Among them, the most frequently studied topic was classical prose (fiction), with 28 papers (25%), followed by classical poetry with 22 papers (19.6%). Combined, classical literature accounts for 50 papers, or 44.6%, showing a markedly higher ratio than other literary topics. Section 3 reviews the status of academic conference presentations. The 「東洋學」 Research Institute actively organized nationwide conferences. The participating scholars were highly recognized on a national scale. These conferences were published almost without exception in 「東洋學」 from the 1st (1971) to the 99th issue (2014). A total of 73 academic conference papers related to Korean linguistics were published, with most falling under history of Korean and lexicography. In Section 4, the distribution of contributing researchers for both Korean linguistics and literature papers, as well as academic conferences, is analyzed. A total of 211 authors have published in 「東洋學」. Among them, Professors Nam Pung-hyun and Lee Gun-sik each contributed 8 papers; Professors Hwang Pae-gang, Yoon Hong-ro, and Kang Jae-chul each contributed 7 papers; and Professors Lee Ki-moon, Jeon Gwang-hyeon, Hong Yun-pyo, Park Chan-gyu, and Im Seon-muk each contributed 5 papers. Contributions below this level were not separately mentioned.
