한국 근대 지식사회를 상징하는 개화사상은 일본의 토양에 적응했던 서구의 展望槪念들로부터 커다란 영향을 받았다. 그 가운데 역사, 문명, 진보는 미래로 향하는 시대적 열망을 적극적으로 표현했던 중심개념들에 속한다. 이러한 일본식 번역용어들이 한국 개화파 지식인들과 접합하는 과정에서 어떠한 소통행위가 발생하는가? 이 질문은 한국 근대 형성기 의미론의 뿌리를 먼저 외부 세계에서 추적해야만 하는 과제를 지시한다. 일본 계몽의 시대를 상징하는 후쿠자와 유키치가 유럽의 신개념들을 받아들이는 과정이 그 출발점이 될 수 있다. 그리고 그의 문하에서 서양의 신식 학문을 배우기 시작했던 유길준이 외래 용어들을 배치하는 가운데 의미론 투쟁을 예고한다는 사실에 깊이 주목할 수 있을 것이다. 후쿠자와와 유길준의 사례에서 찾을 수 있는 移植言語들의 용법은 현대의 개념사 인식론과 맞닿아 있다. 이로부터 시대적 개념들과 환경이 서로 얽히는 작용 연관 속에서 새로운 시간의 의미를 읽는다. 즉, 지나간 경험공간과 미래의 기대지평 사이에 언어적 존재방식의 불균형이 나타난다는 점이 밝혀질 수 있다. 개념사가 이해하는 근대란 새로운 시간으로 향하는 희망과 공포, 예측과 의지가 역사적 의식으로 표현된 언어적 성과라는 점에서, 후쿠자와와 유길준의 사례는 하나의 연구사적 전망을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The Gaehwa Thought as a symbol of modern Korean society of knowledge was seriously influenced by Western concepts of prospect adjusted to Japanese cultural climate. Among them, history, civilization, and progress were key concepts which expressed actively the aspiration of the times toward the future. A question arises; what kind of communication there existed between these Japanese translation terms and Korean intellectuals of the Gaehwa Party? The question suggests a task where we should trace the semantic roots of the Korean Enlightenment Party, first of all, in the outside world. In this respect, the process in which Hukuzawa Yukichi, the most representative of Japanese Enlightenment, embraced European new concepts, can be the starting point. And it should be noted that Yu Kil-chun, who studied Western learning under him, foretold semantic struggle in the process of deploying foreign terms. The usage of the transplanted language in their examples was closely connected with modern epistemology of conceptual history. We can grasp new meaning of time in the mutual connection between the concepts of the times and local environment. In other words, we should notice the imbalance revealed between the experience space of the past and the horizon of expectation in the future. As the modernity understood within the conceptual history is a linguistic outcome in which hope, fear, prediction, and volition toward the new temporality came into view through historical consciousness, the cases of Hukuzawa Yukichi and Yu Kil-chun, most of all, will provide a useful and informing prospect of research.
