Abstract

In 1597, Japan launched its second Imjin War invasion of Joseon. During this conflict, called the Jeongyu War, the Joseon court resumed its communications with Ming military headquarters in a positive tone. The key features of these communications were sympathy and mutual understanding, rather than an immediate demand for a large-scale offensive. In 1593, the Joseon court had experienced a perplexing response from Song Ingchang (宋應昌), the Ming military commissioner. The court needed a plan to ensure that the 1598 communications would run more smoothly. The Joseon court listened to the problems of the Ming generals and showed sincerity to obtain their support. Based on this understanding between the Joseon court and the Ming military headquarters, the second large-scale offensive was planned by the Ming side. The Joseon court put in place practical measures to support the Ming army such as the transportation of military provisions sent from Ming land, the requisition of rice from Joseon people, and the compulsory mobilisation of necessary manpower. From the outbreak of the Imjin War, the Joseon court carefully managed its relationship with the Ming court and the Ming military headquarters to preserve a sense of national identity. Meanwhile, the Ming focused on cooperation with Joseon rather than demonstrations of superiority. This was because the Ming aimed to finish the war in Joseon as soon as possible. Ming cooperation was driven by the fear that Joseon’s peril would spill over into Ming territory. Most Ming officials and generals worried that Japan would invade their land soon after destroying Joseon. Although it is true that sixteenth -century Joseon was a vassal state of the Ming, the Ming could not interfere in Joseon’s domestic affairs. Joseon was in the junior position in the diplomatic relationship, but the Ming had a moderate amount of respect for the decision-making of the Joseon court.
