Abstract

This article diagnoses the limitations of existing paradigms in Applied Religious Studies (ARS) within the changing religious landscape of contemporary society and explores new directions based on the general theory of human religious characteristics proposed by Evolutionary Cognitive Science of Religion (ECSR). Through an examination of ARS cases from the United States, Japan, and Europe, this study analyzes their characteristics and limitations, while considering challenges posed by modern social changes including secularization, increasing non-religious populations, the emergence of natural religion, the development of digital technology, and societal individualization. This article discusses how scientific understanding of cognitive mechanisms related to human religious behavior, as revealed by ECSR, can serve as a new foundation for ARS, particularly offering more effective practical approaches in areas such as bias reduction, promotion of social cooperation, individual healing, and predictions regarding the future. Based on these insights, this article presents five theses for integrating scientific insights from ECSR into various challenges of modern society. These theses provide new directions for the proposed ‘Applied Scientific Studies of Religious Culture’ (ASSRC) that effectively address key contemporary issues-including secularization, natural religion, religious pathology, digital environments, artificial intelligence, etc.-founded on an understanding of basic religious cognitive mechanisms in humans. Ultimately, this research presents a future vision for ASSRC that contributes to solving practical problems in contemporary society based on scientific understanding of human religious characteristics.
