이 글은 최근의 디지털 기술의 발전과 일상 영역으로의 확대로 인한 종교의 디지털 전환에 관한 연구이다. 21세기 들어서, 종교의 행위와 실천이 가상현실 공간으로 조금씩 옮겨가면서 가상현실 세계는 종교적인 공간이 되어가고 있다. 본 논문은 디지털 종교로의 전환에 따른 특징을 설명하고 디지털 종교에서 부상 하는 이슈들을 신학적으로 논의할 것이다. 특히 가상현실 세계에서 표현되는 ‘초월성’과 ‘초연결성’, ‘불멸성’(immorality)은 종교적인 특성일 뿐 아니라 ‘저 너머 의 세계’(영원한 세계)가 지향하던 특징이다. 또한 가상현실 공간에는 불멸의 존 재로서 ‘디지털 존재’(digital beings)들이 활동하며, 현실의 한계를 뛰어넘는 만남과 무한한 연결로 ‘우주적(보편적) 인류 공동체’를 가능하게 한다. 오늘날 가상 현실 공간은 가장 영적이고 초월적인 만남과 신비롭고 거룩한 체험을 가능하게 하는 공간이 되고 있다. 현대인들은 가상현실 공간에서 거룩한 성소에 머무는 경험을 하는 동시에 접속과 연결을 통해 영적인 네트워크를 만들어간다. 코로나 펜데믹 기간 동안 제기되었던 온라인 교회에 관한 논의는 예배 방식과 장소의 가능성에 관한 논의로 한정되었다면, 최근에 일어나는 ‘종교의 디지털 전환’과 ‘디지털 종교’에 관한 논의는 디지털 사회가 맞이할 종교의 새로운 모습과 가능성을 전망케 한다. 이를 통해 가상현실 세계의 종교성(초월성)을 살피고, 종교적 행위가 어떻게 펼쳐지고 있는지 고찰하면서 디지털 세계의 종교성을 논의할 것이 다.
Abstract
This article is a study of the digital turn of religion due to the development of digital technologies and their expansion into everyday life. In the 21st century, the act and practice of religion has increasingly moved into the virtual reality space, and the virtual reality world is becoming a religious space. This paper describes the characteristics of the transition to digital religion and theologically examines the emerging issues in digital religion. In particular, ‘transcendence’, ‘hyperconnectedness’, and ‘immorality’ expressed in virtual reality worlds are not only religious characteristics, but also characteristics of the ‘world beyond’ (the eternal world). In addition, virtual reality is inhabited by ‘digital beings’ as immortal beings, enabling a ‘cosmic (universal) human community’ through encounters and infinite connections that transcend the limits of reality. As such, virtual reality spaces are becoming spaces for the most spiritual and transcendent encounters and mystical and holy experiences. In virtual reality spaces, modern people experience being in a holy sanctuary, while creating spiritual networks through access and connection. While discussions about online churches during the pandemic were limited to the possibilities of ways and places of worship, recent discussions about the ‘digital transformation of religion’ and ‘digital religion’ offer a glimpse into the new forms and possibilities of religion in a digital society. This paper will discuss religiosity in the digital world by examining the transcendence of religion in virtual reality and how religious practices are unfolding.
