Abstract
The purpose of this study is to show the necessity of registering Korean Nongyo as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (ICH) recognized by UNESCO and to also discuss specific alternatives. Korea’s main form of agriculture has been rice farming, and Korea is still a major rice farming region in East Asia. As a result, various rice farming songs (RFS) have been handed down in varieties specific to countries and even regions within countries. These songs have been designated and preserved as ICH of the state or each local government under the names Nongyo and Deulsori, and the designated cultural properties amount to more than 50 items. RFS are listed as ICH in Vietnam and the Philippines. Even though Korean rice farming songs meet the sufficient conditions of ICH in many ways, there has not been a full-scale discussion on the issue of registration as an ICH and numerous RFS in each region are in danger of disappearing from transmission. To overcome these problems and to list these RFS as an ICH, 1. It is necessary to systematically grasp the nationwide distribution of RFS in Korea and the status of an ICH designation. 2. Among these RFS, songs deemed ICH should feature a representativeness that allows them to be seen as exemplary samples of RFS in their given region. 3. To select songs that are appropriately representative of their region, songs from the central region and songs from the border region should be considered together. 4. If the Jeonbuk Province is looked at in a limited way, Sunchang Geumga-Deulsori would be characterized by RFS in the Honam region in many aspects. In addition, compared to other regions, regional equity must also be considered since there are no folk songs currently designated as national intangible heritage in the Jeonbuk Province. 5. To register the RFS of South Korea as a reasonable ICH, the option of registering in solidarity with other rice-farming countries, including North Korea’s RFS, should be considered.
