Abstract

During the 13th and 14th centuries, a completely new format of Buddhist historical texts, namely those in the form of biographic-thematic styles, were compiled in succession in the three countries of China, Korea, and Japan. In China, Zongjian compiled the Shimen Zhengtong (Comprehensive Orthodox Transmission of the Sākya Clan) in 1237. In Korea, Ilyeon compiled the Samguk Yusa in 1289, and in Japan, Shiren compiled the Genko Shakusho in 1322. Although the Shimen Zhengtong was ahead of its time, Korean and Japanese authors each produced Buddhist historical texts that were exceptionally unique in formation, arrangement, and content. This means that there was a common recognition of the need to write a new form of Buddhist historical texts during key historical turning points, but their intentions and goals were differed greatly. Zongjian advocated sectarian orthodoxy in his Shimen Zhengtong, while Ilyeon advocated equality of the upper and lower classes, men and women, monks and laity, and Confucianism and Buddhism in his Samguk Yusa. Shiren advocated the reverence for the king in his Genko Shakusho, claiming that Japan had become a land of complete Mahāyāna Buddhism thanks to the virtues of the emperors. These three different claims were partly due to differences in the authors’ historical consciousness but were also related to the development of Buddhist history in the three countries. Zongjian’s Shimen Zhengtong was a counterargument to the Song Dynasty Chan Buddhism’s repeated compilation of Chan Buddhist historical texts, which emphasized sectarian orthodoxy and superiority. Samguk Yusa was written to correct the manner in which previous Confucian and Buddhist historical texts had been biased toward politics and Buddhism, respectively, and to highlight the historical fact that Confucianism and Buddhism coexisted and that politics and religious history were intertwined. The Genko Shakusho was written to overcome Japan’s backwardness and underdevelopment in the compilation of Buddhist historical texts and to show that their country was a country of Mahāyāna Buddhism.
