Abstract

Until recently, Korean scholars of religious studies emphasized the active role of religion in the public sphere, especially following the pandemic. This focus is a response to declining social trust toward institutional religions and waning religious influence in society. However, since former President Yoon declared Martial Law on December 3, South Korea has experienced an unprecedented political movement. Leaders from Protestant churches have taken to the streets, rallying a diverse segment of the public around extreme conservative ideas. These people are often referred to as the “asphalt right.” Consequently, Korean Protestant churches have become a significant driving force behind the far-right movement, forming alliances with conservative political factions. In this context, it is crucial to reevaluate academic and religious discussions about “public religion.” This article will examine the sociopolitical background of the emergence and expansion of the discourse on “public religion,” as well as the reasons why recent phenomena surrounding far-right Protestants are not willingly integrated into this discourse. Lastly, it proposes an alternative approach to the subject of “public religion,” one that is more flexible and goes beyond the normative nature of the existing discourse.
