한국개신교 보수주의와 극우주의 관계 고찰 - 계엄 사건을 통해 본 정치세력화된 기독교에 대한 성찰

이 논문은 한국 사회와 기독교 안에서 벌어지는 정치와 종교의 관계성에 대해 다루고 있다. 2024. 12. 3 계엄 사건이 일어났던 직후 대다수의 시민들은 사건에 대한 사법적 처리 절차를 따라가며 안정적인 사회로 회복될 것을 기대하고 있었다. 그러나 시간이 경과되면서 사건의 양상이 달라졌고, 사회 내 또 다른 시민들에 의한 폭동이 발생했다. 그것은 과격한 시위와 종교집회로 연결되고 있었다. 그리고 폭력적 정치 행위 속에 한국개신교가 관련되어있는 정황들이 발견되었다. 이 연구는 개신교의 정치적 활동 중에서도 최근에 그 활동이 부각된 개신교 보수주의와 개신교 극우주의를 초점에 두고 이들의 활동과 특성, 그 관계성에 대해 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 폭력적 사건들의 형태와 내용이 어떤 특징을 가지고 있는지, 다른 폭력 사태들과 어떤 유사성을 갖는지, 그것이 궁극적으로 의미하는 바는 무엇인지 확인하고자 했다. 이를 세 단계로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 첫째, 현상을 포착하여 판단중지 상태로 사건 자체를 기술하고 그 의미를 찾았다. 둘째, 포착된 현상이 의미하는 바를 탐구하기 위해 다른 사례와 비교하여 사태를 분석하였다. 셋째, 분석된 사건의 근원과 그 본질을 탐구하기 위해 개신교 집단의 정체성이라는 틀 안에서 살펴보되 그 지향성을 조준하기 위한 현재적 자리를 짚어보았다. 종교의 사회 유지 기능이나 예언자적 개혁기능에 모두 부합하지 않는 것임이 확인된다. 신뢰를 기반으로 하는 종교의 영역이 소실되고 있는 현상임을 알려준다.
Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between politics and religion within Korean society and Christianity. Following the 3 December 2024 martial law incident, the majority of citizens expected a return to stability as the judicial process unfolded. However, as time passed, the nature of the incident changed, and riots broke out among another segment of society. These riots were linked to violent protests and religious gatherings. Additionally, evidence emerged suggesting the involvement of Korean Protestantism in violent political acts. This study focuses on Protestant political activities, particularly the recently prominent Protestant conservatism and Protestant far-right movements, to examine their activities, characteristics, and interrelationships. Through this, we sought to identify the characteristics of the forms and contents of violent events, their similarities with other violent incidents, and their ultimate significance. This was examined in three stages. First, we captured the phenomenon, described the event itself in a state of suspension of judgement, and sought its meaning. Second, we analyzed the situation by comparing it with other cases to explore the meaning of the captured phenomenon. Third, we examined the analyzed events within the framework of the Protestant group’s identity to explore their origins and essence, while identifying their current position to target their direction. It was confirmed that these events do not align with either the social maintenance function or the prophetic reform function of religion. This indicates that the realm of religion, which is based on trust, is disappearing.
