질적 연구 방법의 내용과 적용전략: 양적인 질적 연구와질적인 질적 연구

초록

이 글은 최근 행정학계에서 관심이 제고되고 있는 질적 연구가 무엇인가에 대해 깊이 있는 소개를 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 우선 흔히 질적인 연구라고 일컬어지는 것중 많은 부분이 양적인 질적 연구로서 협의의 질적인 연구와는 구분됨을 주장한다. 아울러 진정한 질적인 연구란 무엇인가에 대한 논의를 한다. 즉 질적 연구가 가져야 할 요건, 질적인 연구를 해야 하는 이유, 질적인 연구의 구체적인 유형 등을 제시한다. 구체적으로는 연구대상에 대해 얻은 자료를 계량화하는 방법으로 가공을 하느냐의 여부와 논문의 핵심 주장부분을 통계적 유의성 검증에 의존하느냐의 여부가 질적 연구인가 아닌가의 판단기준이 된다. 이런 기준에 의하면 계량적 실증적 연구에서부터 완전한 질적인 연구까지 다양한 연구유형이 존재한다. 이와 같이 질적인 연구가 다양하고 광범위함에도 불구하고, 좋은 질적인 연구란 평가하는 기준이 양적인 연구의 평가기준과는 다름을 제시한다. 마지막으로 질적인 연구는 무엇보다도 연구윤리의 확보가 치명적임을 주장한다.

Abstract

This paper argues that a qualitative approach is different from a quantitative approach in the social sciences. It criticizes those scholars who assume that a 'qualitative metholology' still needs to satisfy a quantitative approach's requirements, including the testing of hypotheses. This paper proposes that the true qualitative approach uses directly collected raw data and information about the social phenomenon to be studied and does not rely on statistical significance tests to develop the main argument of a paper. This means that some studies declaring themselves to be using a qualitative approach by the authors are in fact quantitative. Some paper reviewers use unfairely the quantitative method criteria and framework when they review true qualitative studies. This misunderstanding contributes to a proliferation of pseudo-qualitative studies and hinders the development of a true qualitative approach. This paper concludes with a discussion of how to use the true qualitative methodology.
