사회과학 연구의 양적 방법과 질적 방법들은 상호 보완적인 장단점을 지니고 있으며, 따라서 동일한 연구 내에서 양적 방법과 질적 방법의 결합을 모색하는 방법론적 다각화(methodological triangulation)를 통해 단일 방법(mono-method)을 적용한 연구가 지니는 한계를 극복할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 시각에서 본 연구는 행정학 연구에서 좀 더 강력한 추론이 가능하고, 연구 오차를 감소시키며, 종합적이고 다양한 시각을 제공하는 대안적 방법으로 방법론적 다각화를 제안하였다. 이를 위해 선행 연구와 문헌에 대한 검토를 토대로 다각화의 주요 쟁점들을 고찰하고, 실제로 행정학 연구에 적용할 수 있는 방법론적 다각화 모형으로 순차적 다각화, 병렬적 다각화, 교차적 다각화 전략들을 제시하고 장단점을 살펴보았다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to position triangulation, in particular methodological triangulation, as an alternative research method to overcome the limitations of traditional qualitative or quantitative mono-method research. For this, this paper conducted an extensive literature review about triangulation and suggested three different types of methodological triangulation for mixed methods research. A key feature of methodological triangulation was its methodological pragmatism which mixes or combines quantitative and qualitative techniques or methods into a single study, resulting in superior research compared to traditional mono-method research. This paper suggested that researchers in public administration use multiple methods in answering research questions, rather than constraining their choices in method selection.
