본 논문은 세계화의 도전에 직면한 한국사회의 바람직한 정치적 대응방안을 특히 공화민주주의의 시각에서 밝혀내고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 세계화의 다양한 측면에 대한 분석을 통해 한국사회의 정치발전 방향을 공화주의와 민주주의의 양대 측면에서 종합적으로 고찰할 것이다. 그동안 한국사회에서 민주주의에 대한 논의는 상당한 정도로 축적되었으나, 공화주의에 대한 논의는 미약했다는 점을 부인할 수 없다. 따라서 본 논문은 산업화의 완성과 민주주의의 공고화를 거쳐 세계화시대에 접어든 한국정치가 보다 바람직한 국민통합을 성공적으로 달성하기 위해서는 공화주의와 민주주의의 이념을 아우르는 공화민주주의의 시각에서 정치발전을 모색해야 할 것임을 강조하고자 한다.
Abstract
This article tries to come up with proper political responses to the challenge of globalization, from the point of view of republican democracy. To achieve this purpose, I shall articulate every important aspect of the present mode of globalization and, then, delineate a proper political development in Korea in light of both democracy and republicanism. So far have there been lots of discussions about democracy, but little attention to republicanism. For this reason, I shall endeavor to sketch the Korean political development, with an emphasis on the integrity of the nation.
