비교적 전망에서 본 식민지도시의 역사적 전개와 공간적 특징

식민지도시 연구는 개별 식민지도시에 대한 구체적인 실증적 연구 작업과 이러한 작업의 경험적 결과에 기초한 이론적․방법론적 연구로 대별할 수 있다. 하지만 식민지도시 연구가 단순히 식민지적 경험의 구체성 확보와 그를 통한 역사의 특정 국면으로서의 식민지상 이해에만 목적을 둔 것이 아니라, 오늘날 현대의 규정적 문제점인 근대성과 그것의 가장 노골적인 발현형태로 상정되는 식민성의 이해를 목표로 한다면, 식민지도시 연구의 시점이 그 구체적․경험적 결과에만 머물러서는 안 된다. 근대성과 식민성에 대한 해명을 목표로 수행하는 식민지도시 연구는 일정한 이론적 천착과 추상적 수준에서의 방법론적 고민 위에 구체성의 확보로 들어갈 때에만 유의미한 결과를 얻을 수 있다고 본다. 그런 면에서 이 연구는 개별 식민지도시에 대한 접근을 위한 전단계로서 좀 더 이론적이고 일반적인 수준에서의 식민지도시를 이해하고자 하는 시도이다. 먼저 본 연구는 일반적 수준에서의 식민지도시의 역사적 전개를 식민주의의 역사적 발전과정과 연동하여 단계별로 살펴보았고, 다음으로 식민지도시가 가진 일반적 특징과 공간적 특징, 특히 이중도시적 측면을 서구제국주의와 일본제국주의의 식민지도시들간의 비교를 통해 비판적으로 살펴보았다. 전체적인 결론은 이러하다. 19세기 이전 중상주의 시기의 ‘상업적’ 식민주의 시기에는 주로 연안지역에 거점 형식의 도시를 통해 식민지도시가 전개된 반면, 19세기의 산업자본주의 시기의 ‘산업적’ 식민주의 시기에는 식민지도시가 보다 복합적인 성격을 지니는 형태로 전개되었다. 특히 원료가공공업을 필두로 한 산업도시화와 화물집산지로서의 성격 강화가 주요한 특징으로 나타났다. 한편 19세기 이후 식민지도시의 공간적 측면에서 이중도시론으로 표현되는 종족이나 계급에 따른 공간적 격리(segregation) 현상 역시 이전보다 두드러지게 나타났다. 식민지도시의 일반적 특징과 관련해서는 선행연구에서 정리한 30가지 특징들을 비판적으로 살펴보아 좀 더 비교적이고 구체적인 측면에서 검토해야 할 점이 많음을 밝혔다. 특히 공간적 격리와 관계된 이중도시론이 가지는 지나친 추상성과 그로 인해 나타나는 실제 모습의 기각 부분을 도시 간 비교를 통해 드러냈고 이런 문제를 넘어서기 위한 좀 더 비교적인 측면에서의 식민지도시 연구의 필요성을 밝혔다.
Abstract
The studies of colonial cities can be divided into the empirical researches on each of colonial cities and the theological and methodological systematization on the basis of findings out of them. However, if these studies aim to the illumination of modernity and coloniality which are the problematic points determining this world, they may obtain the meaningful gains only when they approach the concreteness underlying some of theological excavations and methodological considerations in abstract level. Thus, this article attemp to understand the colonial cities in the theological and general level. being as a step towrd the approaches to each of colonial cities. The general conclusions are as follows. Firstly, the commercial colonialism period showed that the colonial cities of trading post type were scattered along various coastal regions. Secondly, the industrial colonialism in the nineteenth century witnessed that they had the multiple natures. In particular, their main characteristics included the industrial urbanization including the processing industry with inherent materials and the intensification of the nature as an entrepôt. On the other hand, in the spatial aspect, the colonial cities had exposed the spatial segregation on the ethnics and classes more clearly than ever. Thirdly, the 30 general characteristics of colonial cities listed by Telkamp were examined. As a result, it can be said that the general characteristics must attain the concreteness through the empirical and comparative studies on each of colonial cities. Above all, we find out that the conception of 'colonial duality' is abstract excessively and must miss the real livings of people. Consequently, the colonial cities must be studied in the more comparative perspective.
