식민도시 인천의 거주지 분리 담론과 실제

본 연구의 목적은 기존의 인천의 식민도시 이중구조론에 대한 비판적 검증이다. 이를 위해 두가지의 분석이 진행되었는데, 첫 번째 분석은 어떻게 그리고 왜 일본 제국주의자들이 식민도시 인천의 이중성을 구성하였는가에 초점이 맞춰졌고, 두 번째 분석은 인천 내부 구조의 다양성 분석에 초점이 맞춰졌다. 구체적으로 첫 번째 분석에서는 인천의 식민도시 ‘이중도시론’이 제국주의 타자담론에서 기원하여 각종 식민 담론 및 정책 등을 통해 구성된 것이었으며, 특히 이분법적인 지명 부여가 이러한 이중구조론을 강화시키기 위한 식민정부의 의도가 반영된 것이었음이 밝혀졌다. 이렇게 식민정부가 지명부여를 통해 이중구조론을 확대 재생산한 것은 지배 및 민족 차별을 정당화하기 위한 목적에서 비롯된 것임을 확인하였다. 한편 피식민지민인 한국인들도 ‘남북촌’이란 개념으로 이중도시론을 받아들이고 확대 재생산하고 있었는데, 이는 민족 차별을 고발하고, 나아가 민족 정체성을 확립하기 위한 의도가 깔린 행위였다. 이 결과 식민도시 인천의 지배민족과 피지배민족 모두에게 이중도시 심상지리가 불변의 진실로 자리잡게 되었다. 두 번째 분석에서는 이러한 이분법적인 심상지리와 달리 실제 인천은 지배민족과 피지배민족 그리고 제3의 존재인 중국인 까지 섞여 존재하고 있던 도시였음을, 기존의 상이지수법의 한계점을 극복한 다양성 지수법(Diversity Index)을 통해 확인하였다. 즉 인천의 내부는 한국인과 일본인 독거지 뿐 만 아니라 잡거지가 함께 공존하고 있었음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 궁극적으로 기존의 식민도시 내부구조에 대한 인식론인 ‘남북촌’론을 탈피하여, 지배자와 피지배자간의 상호작용이라는 식민지의 본질을 파악하기 위한 선행 작업으로써 수행되었다. 즉 양쪽이 분리되어 있었다는 것은 담론에 불과하며 실제는 뒤섞여 있었음을 과학적으로 입증하고자 했고, 이러한 잡거는 식민지적 문화 접변현상을 일으킨 배경이 되었음을 논증하고자 하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the colonial duality of Incheon critically. To achieve this purpose, two kinds of analyses are executed. First analysis is on how and why the Japanese colonizer constructed the imaginative colonial duality of Incheon. Discovering the diversity of inner structure of colonial Incheon is the second analysis. In the first analysis, it is revealed that the duality of colonial Incheon is derived from imperial Other discourse and various imperial policies. Especially, it is discovered that the dual naming of the administrative unit names, machi and ri, was a kind of colonial policy to enforce the duality of the colonial city. By using this kind of policy, the colonial government tried to justify the colonization and ethnic discrimination. Paradoxically, the colonized Korean accepted the colonial duality to complain the ethnic discrimination and to enhance the ethnical identity. As a result, the duality of colonial Incheon became a constructed reality between the colonizer and the colonized. In the second analysis, the author tried to reveal the reality of colonial Incheon. By using the diversity Index, the author find that the inner structure of the colonial city was composed of not only the segregated areas but also the mixed areas. Moreover, the fact that chinese people was also an important ethnic group in the colonial city is revealed. Ultimately, this author argue that the essence of the colonial urban society is not the segregation but the interaction among the colonizer, the colonized, and the immigrants.
