Abstract
This paper examines country-level differences in public attitudes toward the role of government as well as the cultural and institutional sources of these differences, particularly in terms of religion and legal traditions. Analysis shows that there is little country-level difference in public support for government intervention associated with addressing market failure, while notable differences exist in support for government action associated with improving equity. Analysis also reveals that the effects of religion and legal tradition on public support for government action vary, depending on whether this action is associated with the economy or welfare. Moreover, public support for equity-oriented economic intervention is lower in countries where Protestantism is strong, while support for equity-oriented welfare intervention is higher in countries where Catholicism is strong. Public support for government intervention associated with equity improvement is found to be higher in countries with the French civil law tradition than in countries with the common law tradition. Overall, the findings suggest that the historical heritages of religion and legal traditions constitute sources of public attitudes toward the role of government.
