Abstract
With the exponential growth of the global elderly population and the ever-increasing demand for elderly care, care-related technologies are gaining traction as a solution. Software, robotics, and artificial intelligence in the care sector have the potential to effectively and efficiently address the socioeconomic challenges associated with an aging population. The adoption and impact of care technologies must be assessed in the socioeconomic and policy context. In particular, it is worth noting the impact of state-developed and enabled care technologies on the social relations through which care is organized and the working conditions of care providers. Japan and Singapore, like South Korea, have promoted technological innovation in elderly care against a backdrop of aging populations, fiscal consolidation, market expansion and growth drivers, support for the desire of older adults living alone to live independently, and demand to ease the labor burden of informal care. This study examines the current status of care technology in Japan and Singapore, which are leading the way in care technology, and the socioeconomic and institutional context of its utilization, and draws implications for care in Korea.
