Abstract
This study explored customized distribution strategies for social robots focusing on user autonomy and educational support, based on the usage experiences of older adults living alone. Against the backdrop of a super-aged society and the shortage of care workers, the research aimed to identify effective ways to utilize social robots in elderly care. Focus group interviews(FGIs) were conducted with 12 older adults from vulnerable groups who regularly used two representative Korean social robots, Dasom and Hyodol. The collected qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that social robots provided multidimensional benefits, including assistance with physical health management, emotional support, and the alleviation of social isolation. Participants perceived the robots as “family,” “companions,” or “friends,” demonstrating emotional transference that contributed to an improved quality of life. However, limitations were also identified, such as insufficient initial training and ongoing support, gaps in digital literacy, and restricted user choice due to top-down distribution. These findings highlight the necessity of personalized distribution strategies and systematic educational support tailored to individual characteristics and needs. This study underscores the potential for social robots to evolve beyond auxiliary devices into integrated care resources and proposes key policy and practice directions, namely the establishment of user-centered distribution systems and the reinforcement of continuous educational support.
