Abstract
This study analyzes the current state of technology-mediated elderly care in South Korea and examines its ethical implications from the perspective of care ethics. The increasing aging population and declining birthrate have led to the proliferation of technology-mediated care, including AI care robots and IoT-based monitoring systems. However, this raises ethical dilemmas concerning the autonomy of the elderly, the invisibility of certain aspects of care, and issues of accessibility and equality. This research analyzes various examples of technology-mediated care, such as IoT-based health management, emergency safety services, AI check-in calls, and care robots, and examines the ethical implications of technology from the standpoint of care ethics, which emphasizes relationality, empathy, and practical action. In a postmodern society where the boundaries between human and non-human are blurred, technology, rather than simply replacing human labor, can potentially act as an agent within caregiving relationships, becoming a subject that practices humanistic care. For technology to contribute to humanistic care, which affirms the interdependence of subjects, issues of autonomy in technology-mediated care, the invisibility of certain aspects of care, the commodification of technology, and unequal access must be addressed. This study proposes directions for technology development and application based on care ethics and explores ways in which technology-mediated care can contribute to humanistic care, that is, universal care. In conclusion, technology-mediated care should not simply pursue efficiency but should be built on an ethical foundation that respects the relational and emotional essence of care and considers social equity.
