Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory study is to analyze the relation between level of social spending and subjective poverty. For this purpose, by utilizing Eurostat database, data of 30 European countries were extracted. This study evaluated the relation by using correlation, cluster analysis and Kruskal-Wallis H test. The main results are as follows. First, level of social spending had strong negative correlations with subjective poverty rates. Second, subjective poverty rates were much higher in countries recording lower level of social spending. These results show that increasing level of social spending can be an effective measure to alleviate subjective poverty.
