Abstract
This paper analyzes Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and the prolonged conflict based on the ontological security theory. The previous studies illustrate the event in terms of material and physical security. However, the existing approach alone cannot fully explain Russia’s act of putting up with substantial damage in the long term. In contrast, the ontological security which is equivalent to a critical IR approach has high validity in describing such actions of Russia. Moreover, the approach is highly relevant in analyzing the bilateral relations between Russia and Ukraine after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This paper reaffirms the ontological security theory through the case of Russia and contributes to a multi-layered understanding of Russia’s policy toward Ukraine.
