Abstract

This paper focuses on Jeon Byeong-sun's What Comes After Despair, which intervenes with counter-memory of this incident amid the suppression of memories of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident by the state or the unilateral dominance of official memory constructed by the state. This work, which substantially reflects the author's autobiographical experiences, activates memories different from the government's official narrative of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and thereby presents a new representation of the incident, though this process does not take the form of resistance or struggle. Instead of actively refuting the errors in the official memory, indirect strategies are employed, such as packaging one's memories as speculations, jokes, rumors, and happenings, or adopting conventional melodramatic styles. Although this performance of memory does not constitute active struggle, it holds significance in that it resists the bias of official memory and makes one aware of the “plurality of memory”—the possibility that memories of an event do not exist in just one form.
