Abstract
Troubles and conflicts within people usually begin with human relationships, and they become inner conflicts and even traumas. This paper examines a female protagonist, Sal's inner conflicts and trauma based on human relationships around her since her mother runs away from home. The paper studies the relationship between Sal and her mother and the relationship between Sal and her friend, Phoebe, and how Sal acquires bravery and self-esteem on her own. To mark the theme clearly, the paper focuses on analyzing the psychology of Adler, who created an individual psychology and encouraged people to have love and courage. After Sal's mother runs away from home, Sal begins traveling with her grandfather and grandmother to follow her mother's trace. During the trip, Sal tells a story to her grandparents about her close friend Phoebe. While Sal tells Phoebe's story, she has an opportunity to reflect on her trauma and inner conflicts. Moreover, through the journey to her mother's final place, Sal is able to wear her mother's moccasins and understand her mother's inner conflicts better. Through this process, Sal learns a wisdom of distinguishing what she can change and cannot change. She is no longer bound to face the present with the past, but no longer holds the courage to live in the future, nor does she blame her mother for running away from home. This proves that the psychology of Adler's bravery gives compass and support in Sal's life.
