초록

Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moons (1994) portrays the journey of a young girl overcoming the sorrow of her mother's death and growing through the process of mourning. This touching story skillfully handles heavy theme like 'the death of a mother' from the perspective of children. It received acclaim and won the Newbery Award in 1995. This paper analyzes the protagonist Sal’s process of mourning and personal growth using Freud's theory of mourning. Additionally, through an examination of the storytelling techniques used in Walk Two Moons, this study seeks to illuminate the lessons and messages that Sharon Creech intends to convey through children's literature. Freud defines mourning as a reaction to the loss of a beloved object. Grief is a natural emotion that diminishes over time, and the mourning process plays a significant role in comprehending and empathizing with the absence caused by loss. Moreover, mourning is closely intertwined with an individual's psychological development. A successful process of mourning involves more than merely enduring sadness; it signifies the re-construction of one's life and the quest for new directions through the unfamiliar experience of the absence of a beloved object. Once individuals reach the stage of acknowledging the absence through reality-testing, they can move beyond fixation on the lost object and initiate a new life.
