Abstract

This paper examines one of the common narratives in contemporary Children’s and Young Adult(YA) literature, that of the loss and recovery. The relationship between trauma and Children’s and YA literature is increasingly drawing attention from both writers and critics. Trauma literature responds to communal and individual tragedies. The contemporary world, with pandemic, wars, disasters, and terrorism, and the life of children, with the inevitable separation with loved ones, are full of small and big tragedies. Hence, there rises the importance of the narrative of healing. Sharon Creech’s Walk Two Moons(1994) depicts what Deidre Barret calls the “common trauma,” that is, the trauma experienced in individual’s everyday life, such as the death of grandparents or pets, the separation with friends, and so on. Walk Two Moons has been analyzed as a novel emphasizing identity problems, family relationships, and perspective taking. However, the theme of death, mourning, and healing is at the center of this novel as well. One can even read Sal’s story as a case study of the trauma recovery. Sal follows a common pattern a trauma patient passes through during his or her journey toward healing. In describing Sal’s journey, Creech highlights the role of storytelling or narrative-making as an important means of overcoming emotional and psychological trauma.
