Abstract

In Korea, tokgabi has been mostly perceived as a god of wealth. Therefore, that is the portrayal of tokgabi in the books of Korean folktales recorded before 1950. In the books of Korean folktales published in English from 1889 to 1955, tokgabi had brought wealth to good people. In “Kongjwi and Patjwi”, tokgabi appears as a mystical creature that helps good people such as Kongjwi. Picture books of Korean folk-tales published in English in and out of Korea since then were influenced by the above-mentioned books of Korean folktales. There are three stories describing tokgabi as the entity that brings wealth. Tokgabi also appears in six stories of “Heungbu and Nolbu”. In the stories, tokgabi comes out from the gourd of Nolbu to punish the mean older brother. In both the books of Korean folktales in English and picture books of Korean folktales in English, tokgabi looks like a Japanese oni(demon). This is because Korea was under the influence of Japan for decades, and there was no clearly defined image of the Korean tokgabi. Another reason is because the role of tokgabi is that of a mighty creature who encourages good and punishes evil. Furthermore, the imagery of such being as a scary oni was necessary to help the understanding of young children readers. In addition, the bier-carrier, roughneck, and former master who are tracking a fugitive slave in the “Heungbu and Nolbu” story cannot be understood by people who do not know the Korean culture well; therefore they were replaced with tokgabi in the Korean folktales that were translated into English. Some books translated tokgabi into goblin. While native English speakers translated tokgabi as is, Korean translators translated it into goblin. This could be because they did not consider the fact that the nature and character of tokgabi and goblin are significantly different. Accordingly, an agreement on the image of the Korean tokgabi will have to be reached, before the wrong image of tokgabi in diverse records is permanently solidified.
