옛이야기 형제담의 양상과 의미
A Study on Aspects and Meanings of “Brother” Tales －Focused on anthologies of Korean Folk Tales during the period between 1910 and 1945－

이 글은 구비설화가 활자로 정착되기 시작한 1910년대부터 1940년대 전반에 이르는 시기의 설화집 및 전래동화집을 대상으로 옛이야기 형제담의 양상을 파악하고, 작품의 의미를 고찰하였다. 총 61편의 형제담은 형제 불화담 34편, 형제 협력담 15편, 바보 형제담 12편으로 분류된다. 형제 불화담에는 대체로 ‘동생 따라하다 망한 형’의 구조가 나타난다. 형제 협력담에는 민담형 작품과 전래동화형 작품이 있다. 민담형 작품은 선악 관념이 약하며, 형제들의 재주와 협력을 강조하는 신이담의 성격을 드러낸다. 이에 비해 전래동화형 작품들은 좀더 윤리적 성격이 강화된다. 바보 형제담은 지적 장애자인 형으로 인해 겪는 형제의 정신적 고통을 서사화하였다. 옛이야기 형제담에서 ‘재산’은 형제간 불화의 가장 직접적인 원인으로 그려지며, 우애의 권장과 탐욕에 대한 경계가 이야기 산출의 동인이 되었다. 또한 옛이야기에서도 민담형 작품과 전래동화형 작품은 흥미성이나 윤리의식 면에서 서로 성격을 달리하는 점이 있음을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to understand “brother” tales found in Anthologies of Korean Folk Tales that dated from 1910 to 1940, when most tales handed down by mouth started to be collected as books, and to consider the meaning of such tales. A total of 61 “brother” stories were investigated, and these were categorized into 34 tales with a theme of discord, 15 tales of collaboration, and 12 tales of foolish brothers. In the tales of discord, their plots generally give the story of an elder brother who follows the example set by his younger brother, only to lose his fortune. The tales of collaboration fall into two general types: folk tales and classic fairy tales. While the folk tales of this type do present moral lessons, these tend not to be overbearing, and most reveal special abilities and collaboration between brothers, similarly to Miracle Tales. On the other hand, the classic fairy tales of this type are more clearly intended to be taken as moral lessons. The tales of foolish brothers are works that depict in a narrative manner the emotional affliction of brothers caused by an elder brother with a character flaw. In these old tales, ‘property’ is the most common cause of discord between brothers, and the most common theme of the “brother” tales are “brotherly affection” and “restraining greed.”
