『오즈의 마법사』에 나타난 행복의 윤리학

프랭크 바움의『오즈의 마법사』에는 주인공 도로시와 오즈에서 만나게 되는세 친구 허수아비, 양철인간, 사자가 있다. 그들의 공통점은 자신들에게 결핍된 가 치를 추구한다는 것으로, 오즈의 마법사를 만나 자신들에게 결핍된 가치인 지성, 인정, 용기를 얻을 수 있다고 생각하기 때문에 에메랄드 시로 함께 떠나는 것이다. 오즈라는 환상의 세계를 여행하면서 이들은 모두 찾고자 하는 가치가 있다. 도로 시는 가족의 부재를 극복하기 위해 캔자스로 돌아가야 할 방법을 구하고자 하는것이지만, 오즈의 친구들은 자신들이 욕망하는 가치를 채울 수 있기를 바란다. 그 들은 친구가 위험에 처한 상황에서 자신보다 친구를 먼저 생각하는 덕을 발휘함으로써 자신들에게 이미 자신들이 추구한 가치가 덕으로 내재해 있음을 알게 되고그러한 관계를 맺는 것으로써 도로시에게는 가족만이 아닌 친구를 통해서도 행복을 느끼게 된다는 점이 중요하다. 관계를 통해 행복을 얻을 수 있다는 에릭 와이너의 주장처럼 도로시는 현실의캔자스에서 제대로 누려보지 못한 가족, 친구 등의 관계를 오즈의 땅으로 이동해 경험하게 됨으로써 좋은 친구를 가질 수 있다는 행복, 좋은 친구가 가진 덕의 발 현이 친구를 구하고 좋은 관계 맺음을 가능하게 한다는 것을 체득하는 것이다. 좋 은 친구가 있다는 행복처럼 가족에게로 돌아갈 수 있는 행복 역시 도로시가 추구하는 자신에게 결핍된 중요 요인임을 깨달으며 가족이 주는 행복감에 대해 느끼게되는 것이다. 덕 윤리학, 행복 윤리학적 관점에서 도로시의 경우도 친구들과 마찬 가지로 좋은 관계를 맺게 되는 과정을 통해 가족에게로 돌아가는 의미를 더욱 깨닫게 된다는 점이 자신의 정체성 추구에 있어 중요함을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
Lyman Frank Baum is one of the representative writers in Americanchildren’s literature. He produced 14 series of Oz, which were focused on thefantasy land Oz and Dorothy’s adventures. The importance of the name ‘Oz’has varied versions to explicate it. His representative work, The Great Wizard ofOz, has been popular over 100 years to be translated into a variety oflanguages all over the world. This text is well-known for Dorothy’s adventure to Oz. What is mostnoticeable is her making friends with three characters: Scarecrow, Tinman, anda Lion. These friends as well as Dorothy have in common; all of them lacksome values, which are willing to meet the wizard of Oz. They believe thatwizard of Oz enables them to obtain these values. By building good relationships with friends, goodness can be displayedespecially when they take risk for their friends in need. Having good friendslike Scarecrow, Tinman, and a Lion gives Dorothy the meaning of happiness;likewise, she felt the importance of family. In particular, by running risk, they could achieve and fulfill their deficientvalues, which are considered to be an absent part of body. Therefore, Dorothy’sadventures in The Great Wizard of Oz are noteworthy in that she can experiencevirtues of wisdom, love and courage through her friends and realize the genuinemeaning of good friends. On top of that, through the meaningful and strong relationship with her friends, Dorothy can realize the significance of family. Thus, she wants to go back to Kansas where her family belongs in that“there’s no place like home”.
