본 논문은 미국의 아동 문학 작가 프랭크 바움(L. Frank Baum)의 위대한 마법사 오즈(The Wonderful Wizard of Oz)가 대중적으로 흥행할 수 있었던 요인 중하나를 신화의 영웅서사를 수용하고 있기 때문이라 보고, 이를 실증적으로 파악하기 위해 작품에 내재된 영웅서사 구조를 밝혀 보았다. 이를 위해 크리스토퍼 보글러(Christopher Vogler)의 ‘영웅의 여행’ 모형을 적용하여 위대한 마법사 오즈를 분석하였으며, 그 결과 이 작품이 일상세계에서 모험의 세계로 입문하여, 모험에의 소명을 통해 시험과 시련을 겪으며 소명을 완성하는 과정과, 현실 세계로 귀환하여 자아실현을 이루는 과정을 통하여 영웅서사의전형적인 특성을 완벽하게 재현하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 작품에 등장하는 인물들의 역할과 기능, 그 의미를 분석함으로써 작품에서 보편적으로 추출할 수 있는 인물의 유형과 그 원형이 존재하다는 사실도 파악할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구를 통해 작품에 내재된 영웅 신화 서사구조의 ‘보편적 특성’을 파악하고, 작품의 ‘창의성’도 발견할 수 있었다. 이러한 신화분석을 통해 신화가 우리의 삶과 사고 속에 얼마나 보편적으로 자리 잡고 있는지 가늠해볼 수 있었으며, 분석에 적용한 ‘영웅의 여행’ 모델과 행위자로서의 원형적 인물상 분석은 오늘날에도 신화가 이야기의 원천으로 손색이 없다는 것을 새삼 발견하게 해주었다.
Abstract
This paper assumes that one of the reasons why The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, an American author of children’s literature, gained great popularity was a result of it containing the heroic epic form also found in mythology. In order to examine this empirically, the structure of the heroic epic inherent in the book was studied. Christopher Vogler’s Hero’s Journey model was used for the analysis of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was found that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz fully followed the typical features of a heroic epic by including the following content: transference from the ordinary world to a world of adventure, the process of completing a mission through adventure, experiencing tests and ordeals, and the process of achieving self-realization after returning to the real world. By analyzing the roles, functions, and meanings of the characters in the book, it was found that universal prototypes of these characters exist. This paper identified the universal features of the heroic epic contained in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and also found creativity in the work. This paper also shows how deeply myths are entwined in our lives and thoughts. The Hero’s Journey model applied to this analysis and the analysis of prototypical figures helped us to understand that mythology is still a major influence on modern stories.
