아동문학에 나타난 비인간 캐릭터의 알레고리적 기능 연구 - 마해송 동화를 중심으로

이 글은 아동문학에 나타난 비인간 캐릭터의 가치와 의미를 확인하는 작업의 일환으로 비인간 캐릭터의 알레고리적 기능을 밝히고자 마해송의 동화 속 비인간 캐릭터들을 분석한 것이다. 비인간 캐릭터는 비인간이라는 표면 형상에 인간적 속성이라는 이면의 의미가 부여된 서사 주체다. 이 논문은 비인간 캐릭터가 지닌 ‘알레고리의 심연’, 즉 표면의 형상과 이면 의미 사이의 간격에 주목하여, 이를 실제 인간과 인간적 속성 사이의 간격(간격ⓐ), 인간적 속성과 비인간 형상 사이의 간격(간격ⓑ), 실제 인간과 비인간 형상 사이의 간격(간격ⓒ)로 구분하여 마해송 동화 속 비인간 캐릭터를 분석하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 아동문학에서 비인간 캐릭터의 알레고리적 기능은 낯설게 하기, 전복, 안전감, 단순화로 확인되었다. 둘째, 이 기능들 가운데 낯설게 하기와 전복은 간격ⓑ가, 안전감과 단순화는 간격ⓒ가 확보될 때 두드러졌으며 간격이 커질수록 더 강하게 나타났다. 셋째, 각각의 기능을 세부적으로 살피자면, ‘낯설게 하기’는 아동 독자의 시선을 끌고, 아동의 상상을 북돋우며, 아동이 알던 기존 정보를 환기하게 하고, ‘전복’은 기존 역학 관계에 의문을 제기하고 아동에게 통쾌감을 준다. ‘안전감’은 독자가 이야기를 관조적으로 바라보게 하고 심리적 보호막을 만들어 주고, ‘단순화’는 캐릭터에 대한 확실한 상을 제시하고 선명한 메시지를 전달하고 고정관념을 덜어내는 기능을 수행한다. 알레고리는 비인간 캐릭터 형상화의 기본 조건이자 아동문학의 특성과도 이어지는 주요 장치다. 이를 분석한 본 논문은 아동문학에 나타난 비인간 캐릭터의 기능을 밝히기 위한 기본 작업으로, 아동문학에서 비인간 캐릭터가 여전히 환영받는 까닭은 무엇인가, 비인간 캐릭터를 형상화하거나 평가할 때 고려해야 할 점은 무엇인가 등 질문에 대한 답을 구하는 데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is an analysis of the nonhuman characters in Ma Haesong's works to reveal the allegoric function of nonhuman characters as part of the work to identify the value and meaning of the nonhuman characters shown in children's literature. The nonhuman character is an epic subject with the meaning behind human property to the surface shape of nonhuman. This study notes ‘the abyss of allegory’, the gap between the surface and the two-sided meaning of the nonhuman character, which is the gap between the real human and the human nature (intervalⓐ), the gap between the human attribute and the actual human shape (intervalⓑ) and the gap between actual human form and nonhuman form(intervalⓒ). As a result, the allegoric function of nonhuman characters in children's literature was identified by their defamiliarization, subversion, sense of safety and simplicity. Second, among these functions, defamiliarization and subversion were apparent when intervalⓑ is established, psychological safety and simplification were apparent when intervalⓒ established. And the greater the gap, the stronger it was. Third, to look at each function in detail. 'defamiliarization' attracts child readers' attention, encourages children's imagination, evokes child-knowledge existing information, and 'subversion' questions existing dynamics and gives children satisfaction. 'Sense of safety' makes the reader look at the story in an orchestration manner and creates psychological protection, while "simplification" performs the function of presenting a clear image of the character, delivering vivid messages and removing stereotypes. Allegory is a basic condition for impersonating nonhuman characters and a major device that also connects with the characteristics of children's literature. This study, which analyzed this, is a basic work to shed light on the functions of nonhuman characters shown in children's literature, and may help to ask for answers to questions such as why nonhuman beings are still welcome in children's literature and what needs to be considered when shaping or evaluating nonhuman characters.
