Abstract
This paper explores the voices of animal characters in children’s literature and their ethical representation. As a silent group, animals lack their own voices. Depending on the author’s portrayal, they may be given a voice, suppressed, or ignored. In premodern Korea, animals coexisted with humans as equals, but modernization led to their subjugation. Modern narratives often excluded them as independent characters, yet children’s literature, driven by animistic imagination, continued to depict them. Animal representation mainly falls into allegory and fantasy. Allegorical animals serve the author’s themes and remain subordinate to the narrator’s voice, limiting ethical representation. Fantasy, however, allows animals to express desires and assert independent voices.
