우의동화의 문학적 갈래 위상과 교육적 의의

In this article, I analyzed how fables and allegorical fictions are different in children’s literature. They are similar in that both use ‘personification’ to narrate a story allegorically and seem like an ‘animal fantasy’ among the genres of children’s fiction. First, the purpose of creating fables is to satirize people who are represented as animals, with giving didactic and instructive messages, while the allegorical fictions for children are created to arouse emotions and give affectiveness, allowing children to have aesthetic experience of the world. Second, the plots of fables are based on narrative stories, but the allegorical fictions are developed in a discourse using methods of description and literary expression. Third, the allegorical fictions are mostly read by children, whereas the targets of fables include adults, so that reading comprehension and significant level of vocabulary would be required in some works. Finally, the fable don’t have classification according to its length but the allegorical fictions are classified into short and long according to its length. In children’ literature, allegorical fictions and fables should be distinguished because of their distinct characteristics. Therefore, I propose to call them different terms, the allegorical fictions and the fables. The allegorical fictions may also be called as ‘Children’s Parable’ which belongs to children’s fiction.
