Abstract
This study chooses Rylant's Missing May, which won the Newbery Award in 1993, and analyzes the meaning of death in children’s literature. It is said that “death is a part of life.” Death, which used to be taboo to discuss with children, is now one of the main themes in children's literature. This study investigates how the protagonists understand death and how being around death affects child development. The study takes a deep look into the meaning of death in Missing May and observes the healing process from the perspective of the 12-year-old female protagonist Summer. A relationship based on love, rather than material abundance or social achievement, can help the bereaved to overcome grief period beautifully. Saying goodbye to her dying Aunt May maximizes Summer's sadness, but her wounds are healed by the love given by Aunt May. This book weaves the story of life and death with beautiful language in a tightly-structured composition. The author's excellent style and delicate sense warmly portray the nobleness and sublimity of existence, touching the hearts of young readers. These readers, naturally invited to the world of life and death, confirm that love connects the two, giving readers the hope to live a beautiful and noble life.
