Abstract

T his study analyzes the process of the death of the Other and mourning as a growth narrative in Jeong Eun-ju’s Gisoyeong’s Friends. The characters in the text initially deny the death of their friend amid shock and confusion; however, through the sharing of memories, communication with peers, and the practice of rituals, they gradually reconstruct the presence of the absent Other and carry out the process of mourning. This process functions as a growth narrative in that death is not portrayed as something to be overcome or eliminated, but as an experience through which loss is gradually integrated into life. In children’s literature, depicting the death of the Other and the process of mourning enables children to confront the death of others in real life and to respond to it in a reflective and constructive manner. This study is significant in that it repositions the death of the Other and mourning as a core growth narrative in children’s literature and demonstrates that such narratives function as a key catalyst for children’s emotional and cognitive development.
