본고는 인도네시아 전통 설화 <안데안데루뭇>을 블라디미르 프롭의『민담형태론』 기능 이론에 적용하여 서사의 구조적 흐름과 문화적 상징성을 분석하였다. <안데안데루뭇>은 동부 자바와 중부 자바 지역에서 구술 예술로 전승되어 온 자바 문화를 반영하는 설화이다. 본 연구는 이설화의 기능 구조를 체계적으로 검토하고, 각 기능이 자바 사회가 중시하는 조화와 균형의 가치, 시라만(Siraman)과 같은 전통 의례와 어떻게결합되어 변형되는지를 고찰하였다. 주인공은 반복적 시련과 윤리적 선택을 통해 자율적 주체성을 형성하고 공동체 질서 회복을 이끄는 존재로 그려진다. 조력자·가짜 영웅·공주(왕자) 등의 인물들도 기능 수행과함께 자바 공동체 윤리를 반영하는 상징성을 지닌다. 특히 본 설화는 기능 배열이 문화적 맥락에 따라 유연하게 변형되고, 왕자가 공주와 파견자의 기능을 교차 수행하며, 악당 처벌이 약화되어 공동체 조화 회복을지향하는 특징을 보인다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the structural flow and cultural symbolism of the Indonesian traditional folktale Ande-Ande Lumut by applying Vladimir Propp’s theory of functions as outlined in Morphology of the Folktale. Ande Ande Lumut is an oral tradition passed down primarily in East and Central Java, reflecting core elements of Javanese culture. This research systematically examines the tale’s function structure and explores how each function is intertwined with traditional Javanese values such as social harmony and balance, as well as ceremonial practices like Siraman. The protagonist develops autonomous subjectivity through repeated trials and ethical choices, ultimately restoring communal order. Supporting characters such as the helper, false heroes, and the prince (functioning as both princess and dispatcher) embody symbolic meanings that reflect Javanese communal ethics. Notably, the tale features a flexible transformation of the functional sequence according to cultural contexts, with the prince simultaneously fulfilling multiple narrative roles and the weakening of villain punishment, highlighting the emphasis on restoring communal harmony. Through this analysis, Ande-Ande Lumut is revealed as a folktale that follows a universal functional structure while extending its meaning in accordance with regional cultural values.
