‘-이서’의 기원에 대한 일고찰

본고는 양화된 주어 명사구에 주로 결합하는 현대국어 “이서”의 기원에 대해 대안적 가설을 세워 그 타당성을 살펴보려는 목적을 가지고 있다. 현대국어 “이서”의 구성과 분석에 대해서는 다양한 논의들이 이어져 오고 있지만 그 기원과 통시적 형성 과정에 대해서는 그렇지 못하였다. 거의 유일한 논의로 계사 ‘=이-’에 첨사 ‘셔’가 직접 결합한 것이 남아서 문법형태화하여 현대국어의 “이서”로 이어진다는 것이다. 그러나 현대국어의 ‘-께서’는 ‘-겨셔’, ‘-겨오셔’, ‘-겨셔’ 등이 그 선대형이고 이들은 존재동사 {겨시-} 등의 활용형들인바, 또 다른 존재동사 {이시-}의 활용형 “이셔” 역시 비슷한 방식으로 주제 표지나 주어 표지로 문법화했을 가능성이 있는 것이다. 기존의 논의들에서는 성조와 결합제약을 논거로 본고에서 세운 가설을 기각하였지만, 문법화 과정에서 전형적으로 동반되는 형식적 융합과 유착 현상을 감안하면 기각의 근거들에 대한 재반론이 충분히 이루어질 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to investigate a hypothesis on the formation of the Contemporary Korean subject marker –ise (-이서), which comes only with the subject of a quantified noun phrase. Previously isye, the etymological form of –ise was not paid much attention by itself; it was searched upon only as a combination with –sye (-셔). In this paper the form is seen as a conjugated form of an existential verb, isi- (이시-). In Middle Korean, there was a special subject marker with the function of honoring the subject besides marking the NP as a subject; the marker –kyeosye (-겨오셔) was also a conjugated form of an existential verb. This paper assumes that the same process has happened to isi- (이시-) so to form the contemporary subject marker –ise. When a topic is introduced and the topic NP is referential but indefinite, people tends to utilize existential-presentative constructions instead of making a sentence with an indefinite subject directly. This paper argues that this tendency enabled the conjugated form isye of the existential verb isi- to evolve into a topic marker then a subject marker. So far, this is the only alternative hypothesis for the previous ones which analyze –ise (-이서) into i (-이) and se (-서).
