Abstract

This paper attempts to examine the changes of Dalit identity formulated by Dalit movement amidst the political changes since the 1920s. Dalits pursued to identify themselves and be accepted as a part of Hindu society until the early 1930s. There were hurdles like rejection of conservative Hindus and political issue of electoral system. They employed the two-track policy of assimilation with Hindus and claiming for equality on the one hand, and emphasizing image of oppressed minority, on the other. The ultimate failure of temple entry movement and political negotiation for the electoral system led Ambedkar to denounce Hinduism in 1935. Ambedkar started to be attracted to Buddhism near independence of India in 1947 after a long gap. He finally converted to Buddhism along with Dalit mass. Buddhism, a original religion of India distinct from Hinduism, was a good alternative for him not to lose cultural identity as Indians and to remain separate from existing Hindu society. He also attributed the beef-eating to the traditional diet habit of Dalit. Separate religion and their unique but historical diet habit formed essential parts of Dalit identity, who is equal citizens of the Republic of India. Dalit identity formulated during the twentieth century faces challenges in the changing political and economic situation of the twenty-first century. Dalit intellectuals seek for new identity to cope with the new social milieu. We need to pay attention to the development they achieve.
