Abstract
Hindu nationalism can be traced back to the mission work of Christian missionaries during the British colonial era, where it originated from the goal of protecting Hindu identity from Western culture. In the 1990s, the globalization threat posed by the BJP, a right-wing Hindu party, and economic liberalization policies, as well as the rise of the Modi regime in 2014, once again brought anti-Christian sentiment to the forefront. Christian dalits converts face discrimination in society, institutions, and within the church. Firstly, they face discrimination as outcasts within the church, secondly, they are denied benefits of affirmative action, and thirdly, they are deprived of the freedom to convert due to the implementation of anti-conversion laws. In this study, we aimed to analyze the patterns of discrimination faced by Dalits who have converted to Christianity, their resistance, and the reasons why this resistance is limited. Through these discussions, we argue that Dalits are even denied the freedom to convert, particularly to Christianity and Islam, which contradicts India's pursuit of secularism. This represents the Hindu homogenization perspective of state power. Additionally, we aim to understand the situation of India's subaltern groups by examining the discrimination faced by them as minority religions and as ‘Untouchables’.
