Abstract
This research focuses on the early phase, from 1920 to the first half of the 1930s, of Ambedkar-led movement. Early movement was organized and managed by the Mahars, Ambedkar's own caste, and distinct from the Dalit movement after the mid 1930s in its characteristics and strategies. This article analyzes the early Ambedkar movement from the three aspects, modernization of caste, pursuit of universal human rights, and assimilation with Hindus, respectively. Modernization of caste has been promoted in the form of petition from the 19th century, and accelerated by Ambedkar in the form of enlightenment movement among the Depressed Classes. Newly formed caste organizations launched actions such as construction of dorms and award of scholarships, which could give direct effect on the promotion of education. Pursuit of universal human rights meant for the demand for the civil rights and fundamental rights for all, not the religious equality of previous era. Mahad struggle started with the equal approach to the water ended with the bonfire of Manusmriti meaning annihilation of caste society. Finally, assimilation with Hindus pursued that the Depressed Classes would be revived as a equal and integral part of Hindu society. Temple entry satyagraha carried on in order to reform Hindu religion, with the firm consideration that Hinduism was their own religion. The modern characteristics of early Dalit movement, to enlighten and reform themselves, and to secure the fundamental rights were signs of the start of 'democratic revolution' of the 20th century India.
