Abstract
This study explores the formal characteristics of the tiger imagery found in the shamanic art of the Nanai people, revealing underlying cosmological and symbolic systems rooted in their worldview. The research aims to identify shared symbolic meanings between Nanai tiger imagery and Korean shamanic iconography, thereby offering an interpretive perspective that has been overlooked in previous studies. The Nanai’s veneration of the tiger reflects early forms of totemism and animism associated with ancient mythology and embodies their unique historical and ethnographic experiences. Within Nanai belief, the tiger is revered as the spirit master of the taiga, the guardian of hunting and fishing, and the shaman’s spiritual assistant. Nanai representations of the tiger combine the animal’s natural attributes with those of other creatures symbolizing agility and aggression, forming a complex visual synthesis. Three major symbolic elements can be discerned. First, the tiger reflects a dualistic worldview based on twin worship, perceiving the universe in complementary pairs such as male and female or human and attendant. Second, it possesses a cosmic hierarchy extending its influence from mountains to villages and productive grounds, engaging in multiple domains of human life. Third, it functions as a mediator capable of traversing spiritual and earthly realms for healing and cosmic journeys. Because detailed depictions were believed to bring misfortune, Nanai shamanic sculptors adhered to conventionalized and stylized forms. This formal restraint resonates with the symbolic aesthetics also present in Korean folk art traditions.
