Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science

Abstract

The Suez Canal is a key chokepoint in global maritime trade, but its structural vulnerability has been highlighted by the ‘Ever Given’ grounding and geopolitical crises in the Red Sea, necessitating a paradigm shift in related academic discourse. While existing research has focused on specific incidents or economic feasibility analyses, a macroscopic analysis of the entire field’s intellectual structure has been absent. Therefore, this study aims to quantitatively identify changes in the knowledge structure and key trends of international academic research on the Suez Canal using keyword network analysis, and to empirically demonstrate this paradigm shift. A total of 1,675 keywords were extracted from 320 papers collected from three major international academic databases: Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. Keyword Network Analysis of SNA was applied to measure degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality. The analysis revealed that the research paradigm for the Suez Canal is fundamentally shifting in three dimensions. First, the ‘Northern Sea Route (NSR)’ showed a higher degree centrality than the ‘Suez Canal’, confirming that the research focus has expanded to ‘competition and comparison’ analysis with alternative routes. Second, ‘Resilience’ has emerged as a new core mediating concept, suggesting that academic interest has shifted from crisis analysis to ‘crisis management and restoration’ solutions for supply chains. Third, the ‘Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)’ demonstrated high closeness centrality, proving that research is intensifying within the framework of ‘geopolitical competition’. This study quantitatively demonstrates that the academic discourse on the Suez Canal has shifted away from traditional efficiency analysis and is being reorganized around three axes: ① competition with alternative routes, ② supply chain resilience, and ③ geopolitical risk management. The presentation of this knowledge map provides a guideline for exploring future research directions and offers data-driven policy implications for responding to an era of complex crises, which constitutes its academic significance. However, this study has limitations as it relies on author keywords and specific academic databases. Future research needs to deepen the discussion through topic modeling or comparative studies with other maritime chokepoints.
