이 글은『지구 끝의 온실』과『파견자들』이 지구를 낯선 장소이자 행위자로 내세우고 파국의 상상력과 생태학적 사고로의 전환을 통해, 낯설고 어둡고 생동하는 지구를 사변하고 인간-비인간의 도시공동체를 사고실험하고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 『지구 끝의 온실』은 기후/생태 재난에 있어 이분법적인 자연 개념을 해체하는생태학적 사유의 전환을 통해 생동하는 자연-지구를 사변한다. 이 소설에 등장하는사이보그, 식물, 그리고 식물과의 공생과 함께 주목해야 할 것은 이것을 가능하게하는 것이 자연 즉 지구 생태계에 대한 인식의 전환이라는 점이다. 이 소설은 인간이자연을 과연 관리할 수 있는가를 질문하면서 인간/자연이라는 이분법적인 사고를넘어선 과정으로서의 자연을 사유하게 한다. 인공/자연을 구분하지 않는 이러한 사유는 인공 식물인 모스바나뿐만 아니라 생동하는 지구의 다양한 존재들을 통해 더 나은 파국을 가시화한다. 『파견자들』은 인간/자연, 인공/자연의 이분법적인 세계관을 해체하는 데서 더 나아가 낯설고 기괴한 자연-지구를 사변하면서 외계의 침투로 오염된 지구가 과연 파국인지 질문한다. 자연을 대상화하는 낭만주의적 사고가 아닌 아이러니하고 추하고 해롭고 파괴적인 어둠의 요소들이 혼재하는 자연에 대한 생태적 알아차림(ecological awareness)은 어두운 생태로서의 자연을 탈인지(Discognition)하게 하며, 비인간 존재와의 마주침을 통해 인간-비인간 도시 공동체를 창발한다.
Abstract
This study focused on the imagination of the catastrophe and the transition to ecological thinking in Greenhouse at the End of the Earth and The Dispatchers. Through this, it is intended to clarify that we are speculating on the unfamiliar, dark, and Vibrant Earth and thinking and experimenting with human-non-human urban communities. Greenhouse at the End of the Earth speculates on the Vibrant Earth through a transformation of ecological thinking that dismantles the dichotomous concept of nature in climate/ecological disasters. This novel makes us think about nature as a process beyond the dichotomous thinking of humans/nature, asking whether humans can manage nature. This thought, which does not distinguish artificial/nature, visualizes a better catastrophe not only through the artificial plant Mosvana, but also through the various beings on the Vibrant Earth. The Dispatchers goes further from dismantling the dichotomous worldview of humans/nature to speculating on the unfamiliar and bizarre earth and asking if the earth contaminated by extraterrestrial penetration is truly a catastrophe. This is not a romantic thinking that objectifies nature, but shows an ecological awareness of nature that is a mixture of ironic, ugly, harmful, and destructive dark elements. And a human-non-human urban community emerges through encounters with non-human beings.
