Abstract

The face plays a crucial sociocultural role in distinguishing and identifying individuals, while also functioning as key biometric data that constitutes and ‘represents’ personal identity. Deleuze and Guattari (2001) conceptualize the face through the notion of faciality as a system organized along two axes: meaning production and subjectification. They argue that the face is not a natural entity but is constructed through processes of social signification. In this context, face data refers to the objectification and fragmentation of the face, a process that began with photography and has continued into the digital age, where faces are incorporated into data infrastructures through both voluntary and involuntary practices of representation. Face data fixes identity as static and immutable while also participating in systems of bias, classification, and identification. Moreover, in the digital platform and AI ecosystem, face data becomes gendered and operates within a ‘visibility economy.’ ‘Elevated’ face data becomes both a tool for self-representation and a commodity of the platform economy, alienating individuals from their own images as they are distributed through uncontrollable information infrastructures. Face-data activism begins with an awareness of this objectification. It employs strategies of resistance such as masking, camouflage, and forms of deliberate invisibility. Through examples such as women’s mask protests, tactical concealment of face data, and creative efforts to generate non-recognizable faces for AI systems, this article explores how face datafication functions and examines possible ways to resist or subvert the alienation of facial identity in the age of AI.
