이 연구는 크리스퍼 유전자 편집기술의 개발 이후, 점차적으로 실현 가능성이 높아지고 있는 인간 향상의 문제를 다룬다. 대부분 인간 배아에 대한 유전적 향상은 트랜스휴머니즘에 의해 적극적으로 지지되고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 먼저 트랜스휴머니즘을 검토하고, 그 특징과 인간관을 파악한 다음, 인간 배아에 대한 유전적 향상을 왜 적극적으로 옹호하는 지를 분석한다. 이를 통해 인간 배아에 대한 유전적 향상이 ‘더 나은 존재’을 향한 도구적 의미로서, 어떻게 정당화되는지를 살펴보고, 그 함의를 로버트 스파로우(Robert Sparrow)의 구식화(obsolescence) 개념을 통해 조명한다. 이것을 바탕으로, 향상된 인간 배아가 태어난 이후에는 공시적 관점(synchronic perspective)에서 다른 사람들과의 비교 대상이 될 뿐만 아니라, 닉 보스트롬(Nick Bostrom)이 전망한 대로 향상되었을지라도 계속해서 향상을 추구해야 하는 인간은, 통시적 관점(diachronic perspective)에서도 항상 자기 자신이 비교 대상이 됨을 드러낸다.
Abstract
This study delves into the issue of human enhancement, which has been progressively gaining feasibility since the development of CRISPR gene editing technology. Most genetic enhancements on human embryos have been actively supported by transhumanism. Therefore, this paper first examines transhumanism, analyzes its characteristics and views on humanity, and then delves into why it actively endorses genetic enhancement of human embryos. Through this, it can be understood how genetic enhancement of human embryos is justified as a tool for achieving a “better existence,” and illuminates its implications using Robert Sparrow’s concept of obsolescence. Based on this, the enhanced human embryo, born after birth, not only becomes a subject of comparison with others from a synchronic perspective but also, as Nick Bostrom envisaged, consistently reveals that humans must pursue further enhancement, making themselves a point of comparison even from a diachronic perspective.
