Abstract

This article analyzes online Korean classes at the University of Tübingen in Germany amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, examining how the classes were designed and conducted in the context of distance and language education. The premise of the distance education design is as follows: (1) educational goals must be achieved in distance classes, (2) it must minimize the burden on learners, and (3) fairness, transparency, and comparability of evaluation must be ensured. The hypothesis of the language education design is as follows: (1) students must reach a certain level within a limited time, (2) it cyclically develops knowledge and skills and encourages interaction, and (3) it uses various evaluation types. Based on this, teaching methods, structures, activities, materials, and evaluation of online classes were examined. The following implications were derived: (1) it must develop interactive activities suitable for the online environment, (2) self-learning materials, individual feedback, and interest in individual learners are needed, and (3) technical training should be ongoing. It is imperative to develop theoretical and practical development of online distance language education in the future.
