Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose the principle of non-face-to-face Korean language coursedesign. Non-face-to-face classes are more than just a remote class. This is because changes in theteaching/learning environment affect goals, contents, methods, teachers, and learners, which arecomponents of teaching and learning. The principle of general Korean language instruction design isapplied to non-face-to-face Korean language courses, but it should be considered that there aredifferences in the role of teachers or learners, the weight of elements of educational content, andlanguage materials or activities. Unlike general face-to-face classes, in non-face-to-face Korean language classes, first, the contextof language use is implemented in a web network environment. Second, teachers and learnerscommunicate interactively, centering on web content. Third, the boundaries between textbooks andteaching/learning materials are blurred. Fourth, it focuses on the contents of teaching and learningbased on digital media. Fifth, traditional Korean language teaching strategies and learning activitiesare utilized in a new aspect. The principles explored in consideration of the characteristics of these non-face-to-face Koreanlanguage classes include establishing the context of practical language use through digital media, theuse of teaching strategies that promote learning immersion, parallel and integrated presentation ofcomplex form texts and written language texts, and Korean thinking ability. There is a digitalliteracy-based task structure for improvement, and the provision of self-directed learning experiencesusing meta-cognition. In order to apply the principles of teaching/learning design proposed in this paper, it is necessaryto develop an online platform exclusively for non-face-to-face classes by reflecting teachingstrategies and communication methods according to the characteristics of the subject, and tostrengthen the capacity of teachers to design non-face-to-face classes.
